ANVIL'S GOT GAME (ON WEALTH MANAGEMENT)

It was another full house during Association of Young Filipino-Chinese Entrepreneurs (Anvil Business Club)'s 8th monthly Business Exchange Forum, as more than 120 members and guests braved Typhoon Henry's torrential southwest monsoon rains and flocked to the stylish Palm Grove area of the Rockwell Club to hear the legendary investment management guru Wilson L. Sy's incisive insights on how to make it big in the wealth securities business. Joining him were three of PhilEquity Team's most engaging stock experts, Miguel Agarao, Jerome Gonzales and Nicholas Dominador Fernandez, who each took turns enlightening the members with their specific area of expertise.

The first presenter, Miguel Agarao, talked about "Macro Economic Outlook and Strategy," where he emphasized the importance of relevant macro-economic data in forecasting economic conditions to help them advise clients on wealth and investment management strategies.

The second presenter, Nicholas Dominador "N.D." Fernandez, followed it up with a briefer on "Index Forecasting," where he indicated the complexities of tracking the performance of the most representative companies listed on the Stock Exchange. Using a free-float, capitalization-weighted index, performance is measured on actual values, historical data, forecast, chart, statistics, economic calendar and news.

The third presenter, Jerome Gonzales, engaged the audience to the nuances of "Technical Analysis of Stocks," where a security analysis methodology is used for forecasting the direction of prices through the study of past market data, primarily price and volume. Using this widely-accepted method, fundamental analysts examine earnings, dividends, new products, research and the like to identify price patterns and market trends in financial markets and attempt to exploit those patterns.

Finally, the "main man" himself, Mr. Wilson Sy, opted to answer inquiries from the audience. From his wealth of experience and outstanding track record, he was able to enlighten everyone on the basic nuances of stock market dynamics. He said, "the problem with 99% of stock players is that they don't treat their stocks the way they treat their friends." He explained further: "If you have friends who turned out to be bad, wouldn't you dump them? If you have friends who are good, wouldn't you keep them? Similarly, dump non-performing stocks and keep the good ones. Most people tend to sell good performing stocks the moment the value goes up and they earn; while they still keep the poor performing stocks even when the value is already below their purchase price."

The jam-packed forum was also made notable with the utilization of Pigeonhole Live for the first time. The software is an advanced real-time, conference Question-and-Answer tool that enabled conference attendees to post and vote for questions using their mobile devices. Through this system, courtesy of member Jerry Tieng, the speakers were able to identify questions to address on-the-spot, taking into account the popularity of questions.

Mr. Wilson Sy is the Chairman and President of Wealth Holdings Corporation, Vice-Chairman and Director of Asian Alliance Holdings Corporation and Chairman of Manila Stock Exchange Foundation, Inc., among many other listed companies. He previously served as Chairman of the Philippines Stock Exchange and the Manila Stock Exchange. A man with a knack for numbers, he graduated with a Management Engineering degree from the Ateneo de Manila University.

ANVIL AT GENTLEMEN'S JEWEL BASH

Anvil's President Mr. Reginald Yu was invited to represent the Anvil Business Club (Association of Young Filipino-Chinese Entrepreneurs) at an uber-exclusive gentleman's dinner hosted by Asian Dragon Magazine and Jewelmer Joaillerie, as the latter showcased its collection of South Sea pearls and exquisite fine jewelry.

Braving the sudden downpour of torrential rains, around 60 specially-invited guests – all gentlemen ranging from their thirties to seventies – showed up in their dapper suits to feast on an exquisite, ten-course Spanish-cum-French dinner fused with modern techniques from molecular gastronomy. They were greeted by a handsome set of tall and gorgeous models who looked especially elegant as they all wore Jewelmer's finest pieces.

Apart from presenting Jewelmer's efforts in preserving the environment in Palawan and providing livelihood projects for its indigent townsfolk, it also exhibited a short video of how pearls mean to a lady at each stage of her life's milestones.

Which precisely answers the looming question foremost on each guest's mind: "For a product that caters exclusively to women, why were only the men invited to this unique occasion?"

"This is an opportunity that seeks to make the men more appreciative of what pearls exactly mean to a woman," says Jacques Christophe Branellec, brand manager of Jewelmer and the 26-year old son of the company's founder. "No matter at what stage of a woman's life milestones – whether it be a graduation gift, a wedding premium, or an anniversary present – jewels will always play a special significance," he said.

Jewelmer is an international luxury brand that was born out of a commitment to the world’s most lustrous cultured South Sea pearls and exquisite fine jewelry. Established in 1979 by a French pearl farmer and a Filipino entrepreneur, Jewelmer has grown globally to represent a world of rarity and enduring elegance. Exceptional South Sea pearls are the centerpieces of the celebrated Jewelmer Joaillerie brand, which showcases the distinctive style and creative harmony of French design and Asian sensibilities, bringing fine jewelry to brilliant new heights.

Despite the heavy rains and the subsequent flooding that evening, the exquisite affair, the great company, the sumptuous Basque-fusion cuisine, and its warm hosts made the long and drenching trip to VASK Manila all worth it.

Kudos are in order to Ms. Olivia Limpe-aw of Asian Dragon Magazine and Mr. Jacques Christophe Branellec of Jewelmer Joaillerie for proving to be great hosts!

ANVIL IS CITED BY MALAYSIAN TRADE COMMISSION

After months of concerted efforts in pursuit of excellence, the Association of Young Filipino-Chinese Entrepreneurs (Anvil Business Club) is beginning to see the fruits of its endeavors, not the least of which comes from the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), Malaysia's National Trade Promotion Agency.

It citied the Anvil Business Club's "catalytic role in bringing together many of the country's biggest business organizations to partner with MATRADE in identifying and developing areas of cooperation between both countries’ private sectors and encouraging further investment in both the Philippines and Malaysia, thereby accelerating the development of trade links between both countries."

Handing the award was outgoing Malaysian Trade Commissioner and MATRADE's Counselor for Export Promotion, The Honorable Har Man Ahmad. Accepting the special citation on behalf of the Anvil Business Club was Peter Mangasing, the organization's Chairman of the Board.

In a touching, five-minute speech, Commissioner Ahmad repeatedly and profusely praised the Club for "laying the great foundations of friendship between MATRADE and the business organizations in the Philippines," saying that, "were it not for the Anvil Business Club, the Commission's great milestones today will not be made possible."

A government-run corporation created in 1992 through Malaysian Parliament Act No. 490, MATRADE primarily aims to promote Malaysia’s exports, which has since enabled many local companies to carve new frontiers in global markets. Today as they continue to put the spotlight on capable Malaysian companies on the international stage, MATRADE is helping make the phrase "Made-In-Malaysia" synonymous with excellence, reliability and trustworthiness.

Congratulations and more power!
